Air Plant / Tillandsia Care

About & care

Air Plants (Tillandsias) get their name because they utilize the “air” to thrive.  They do not need soil to grow.  Their nutrients and water come from the air which is absorbed through the scales on their leaves.  Air plants do have roots which they use to grip or anchor themselves to trees, cliffs, caverns or other surfaces.  They do not absorb any nutrients from their anchor point.

Air plants, especially those kept indoors, enjoy a good misting once each week.  During hot, dry summer months, for air plants kept outdoors, a full soak in distilled or rain water for 20 minutes every two weeks will provide necessary hydration.  After watering, it is essential to ensure that water droplets do not get caught in the center of the plant.  This will cause the plant to rot.  Turn the plant upside down and gently shake out excess water.

Just like cacti and succulents, air plants thrive on bright indirect light so set them next to a sunny window or under a bright lamp for best results.  If kept outdoors, protect them from direct afternoon sun.  Also, to be on the safe side, if temperatures drop below 50 degrees, bring them inside or protect them with a garden blanket.

Because of their growth habit, air plants are very versatile which make them a beautiful addition to an endless array of arrangements.  They are especially amazing when used in terrariums.
